Pride Month Spotlight: Supporting LGBTQ+ Individuals in Family Law

June 24th 2025

As we celebrate Pride Month, it is important for legal professionals to question how they can further support the needs of LGBTQ+ clients.

For solicitors to ensure that they are supporting LGBTQ+ clients effectively, there are some practical steps that would be advisable:

  • Recognising and respecting chosen pronouns and using accurate and inclusive language. Rather than making assumptions, it is important to ask clients how they would like to be addressed and carry this forward. Mistakes should be addressed.
  • Creating a safe and inclusive environment by allowing clients to open up, whilst also not expecting them to educate you on their identity. Firms could show visible signs of inclusion in their office and culture, such as having gender-neutral language throughout their materials.
  • Being as switched on as possible to the needs of LGBTQ+ people and connecting such clients to specific resources and support groups.
  • Staying up to date with developments in LGBTQ+ law and policy. Solicitors should be aware of the difficulties facing LGBTQ+ individuals.
