Introducing the 50 Plus Champions

December 1st 2021

The Minister for Employment has recently called for employers to support women going through menopause in an effort to reduce long-term unemployment and increase the opportunity for career progression.

Following a recent study it was found that almost one in four women who are suffering serious menopause symptoms are forced to leave work, and that on average women who experience serious symptoms will take 32 weeks off work during menopause.

In response to this the Department for Work and Pensions has formed a team of specialist advisors known as ’50 Plus Champions’ to assist businesses in supporting women with menopause symptoms. The aim is to help women through ensuring that businesses have a better understanding of the impact of menopause and how they can offer support to their employees, hopefully resulting in women no longer feeling the need to end their career too hastily.

With almost one in four women with serious menopause symptoms forced to leave work, the Minister has today called on businesses to tap in to local support for low income older workers through specialist advice offered by a national network of advisors known as 50 Plus Champions.
