Millions of workers set to benefit from a pay rise from 1 April 2025

February 6th 2025

The Government has announced an increase to the rates of the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage from 1 April 2025.

These changes stem from recommendations made by the Low Pay Commission, an independent body that gathers evidence and advises the Government on this.

It is claimed that this increase will award over 3 million workers with a ‘pay boost’, and eligible full-time workers can expect to receive an additional £1,400 a year.

The current and new rates from 1 April 2025 are as follows:

Current rates  Rates from 1 April 2025
Age 21 and over (National Living Wage) £11.44 £12.21
Ages 18-20  £8.60 £10.00
Under 18 £6.40 £7.55
Apprentice £6.40 £7.55

This National Minimum Wage increase enables pay to ‘take into account the cost of living’.

Enforcement

Businesses should ensure that they are aware of and implement the new rates from 1 April 2025, as enforcement measures by HMRC include penalties, recovery of underpayments through courts or tribunals, criminal prosecution and negative publicity through “naming and shaming”.
