Many of SE’s staff and our clients are avid supporters of Northampton Saints Rugby Football Club and have followed their success with great enthusiasm over the years. The club’s recently announced proposal for a memorial wall where supporters’ ashes can be interred is an innovative concept within UK sport, with construction expected to begin this summer.
By creating a dedicated memorial space within the grounds of Franklin’s Gardens, the club is offering supporters a place of belonging and a lasting connection to a club and community that has shaped so much of their lives.
The Legal Position on Ashes Interment
Legally in the UK, you cannot bury a deceased person’s ashes without permission, and many crematoria already provide dedicated areas for interring or scattering ashes. Natural burial sites operate with the necessary consents in place, and cemeteries and churchyards allow the burial of ashes in many cases subject to buying an exclusive right of burial.
Northampton Saints will be obtaining the appropriate permissions from West Northamptonshire Council to ensure that supporters’ ashes can be interred at the memorial wall lawfully and respectfully. The club also plans to hold several Interment Days each year, giving families the opportunity to mark the occasion with dignity and care.
Ensuring Your Wishes Are Honoured
Planning for your own future resting place is something many people now consider as part of their wider estate planning. This can include documenting where you would like your ashes to be interred, setting out any funeral preferences, making financial provisions for your funeral cost and choosing who should make the funeral arrangements. Recording these details in a will and a funeral wishes document helps provide clarity and reassurance for those you leave behind.
At SE-Solicitors, we’re proven legal specialists who see you and your needs clearly. We can help you prepare a will that reflects your wishes and offer guidance on the correct choice of executor to ensure your instructions are carried out. If you’d like to talk through your options, our Private Client team is here to support you.
